What is it?

This moth/butterfly was on our outdoor 4th of July lights the other day and it stayed there for several days. I finally decided to take a picture of it since it was so big and really very pretty...plus the kids thought it was really cool. We couldn't decide if it was a moth or a butterfly though...what do you think? (by the way, this thing was about 5 in wide x 3 in long!)
